It’s difficult to capture the complexity of a post-tensioned (PT) concrete slab. Thankfully, on the day before our concrete team poured the 2000 cubic yards of concrete for 5th and Idaho’s parking garage slab, our drone photographer was there to get evidence of the extreme preparation needed to build it successfully. Post-tensioning has become a specialty of ESI’s concrete division, using it as an alternative to the traditional pre-stressed rebar for concrete slabs on many multifamily complexes. The technique involves pouring the concrete first, and then applying the tension to the steel before the load is applied. This method results in a reduction or elimination of shrinkage cracking and allows for slabs to be thinner and designed for longer spans.
